This COVID Christmas

Ho ho ho! Christmas comes but once a year
Bringing loved ones together and spreading good cheer
Now a nasty new virus has turned the world upside down
But that doesn’t mean our grins need be replaced with frowns
We may be burned out but there's still much to be grateful for
A decorated tree, gifts underneath, food on the table and more
We’ll miss gathering this month but all the while we will know
Our sacrifice will save lives and vaccines are coming, so
Be patient, for this one Christmas that will eventually be forgot
Is harder for COVID-hit families, they are hurting a lot
The holidays aren't always spent close to home or all together
Some relatives live far away, some choose to fly to warmer weather
Many people can't afford a plane ticket or anything extra at all
Think of those who are homeless or without anyone they love to call
If you plan to celebrate Christmas by breaking the rules
You’re selfish. You're cruel. You're an entitled fool.
The measures in place are to protect and ensure
That our hospitals and morgues aren’t overrun and endure
So that after the holidays, no one you love gets COVID-19
They are alive and healthy because you saw them virtually
This Christmas will suck but it’s for a good reason
Don’t see other people if you want them to see another season
What is Christmas, truly, if not to care for each other?
It’s more than a date on an advent calendar
It’s a feeling - a way of being - a chance to reconnect
We can still do that, safely, over the internet
So make different plans, it’s okay! It’s not for forever
Have a peaceful Christmas so next year we can all gather
There’s hope on the way, so let's keep doing our part
Near or far, our loved ones are always close to the heart
This COVID Christmas, may we all do our best
To be good and let Santa Claus handle the rest
